Valhalla Night is one of the most exciting and unique events at Bujinkan Ryuuko Hikan Dojo, bringing together martial arts students for an evening of padded weapons sparring, creative challenges, and community bonding over food and celebration.

Held on the first Thursday of every month, this special night blends safe, semi-competitive martial arts sparring with the spirit of brotherhood and personal growth.

🥋 What Is Valhalla Night?

Born in our early days training in a garage, Valhalla Night started as a casual after-class hangout. As our dojo grew, so did this tradition; now a signature event that brings adult martial arts students and approved teens together to train, spar, and feast.

Named after the Viking warrior afterlife - not to glorify battle, but to celebrate courage, fellowship, and the joy of pressure-tested practice.  Valhalla Night is the one night a month where we break from traditional curriculum and lean into dynamic drills, real-time padded weapons sparring, and a community potluck dinner.

• Padded weapons sparring (all levels welcome)

• Real-time combat learning with no scorekeeping

• Warrior ethics: safety, respect, and mutual growth

⚔️ Sparring Rules & Participation

Valhalla Night sparring is open to:

• All adult students (18+) with active memberships

• Teen Tigers with written parental permission

• All skill levels — from beginner to advanced

• Sparring is paired by ability and experience level

 

✅ Core Guidelines:

• Padded weapons and safety armor are required

• All gear must be pre-approved before use

• No points or "winners" — getting hit is part of learning

• Participants continue the bout even after being struck

• Black belts only may serve as referees

• Referees ensure safety, fairness, and controlled energy

 

🧠 Valhalla Ethics: Train with Control

While sparring is spirited and energetic, it is never reckless. Participants must:

• Show emotional regulation under pressure

• Avoid overzealous or overly competitive behavior

• Maintain composure and self-control at all times

 

⚠️ Any participant who displays unsafe behavior or disregards these expectations may be removed from sparring for the evening.

 

🕓 Arrival & Spectator Info

• Sparring begins in the second half of class

• All participants must arrive early to suit up and warm up

• Spectators are welcome but must be pre-approved by the dojo head

• No spectators are allowed on the mats during sparring

 

🍱 Post-Class Potluck

Following sparring, we gather to share a meal, build friendships, and reflect on our training.
This optional potluck feast is open to all attendees:

• Food or drink contributions are appreciated but not required

• Small cash donations are also welcome to help cover supplies

• Alcohol is allowed during the feast in moderation only

• Any intoxication or disruption results in exclusion from future events

 

🧼 Cleanup = Shared Responsibility

Everyone helps clean up after the event.
Whether it’s stacking chairs, wiping mats, or taking out the trash — we leave the dojo better than we found it.
