🥋 Frequently Asked Questions
Bujinkan Ryuuko Hikan Dojo (Roseville, CA)
Traditional Japanese Martial Arts for Kids, Teens & Adults
❓What kind of martial arts do you teach at your dojo?
At Bujinkan Ryuuko Hikan Dojo, we teach Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, a traditional Japanese martial art that combines elements of self-defense, ancient samurai and ninja techniques, joint locks, throws, and strategic movement. It emphasizes natural body movement, balance, timing, and awareness rather than brute strength.
✅ This is not a sport-based system—we don’t do competition or sparring. Instead, we focus on real-world self-protection, personal development, and the cultural wisdom behind the traditional martial lineages of Japan.
❓What age groups do you offer martial arts classes for?
We currently offer classes for:
-
Ninja Cubs (Ages 7–12): Sundays, 1:00–2:00 PM
-
Teen Tigers & Adult Beginners (Ages 13+): Tuesdays, 7:00–9:00 PM
-
Teen Tigers & Adult Intermediate to Advanced: Thursdays, 7:00–9:00 PM
Each class is taught with age-appropriate methods, safety, and discipline, while keeping it engaging and rewarding for students at all levels.
❓Where is your martial arts school located?
Our dojo is located in Roseville, California and serves students from all across the greater Sacramento area. We are easily accessible and offer free parking on-site.
📍 We are located at 8801 Washington Ave, Suite 107, Roseville, CA 95678. To maintain safety and privacy, we request pre-scheduling class visits.
❓Do you offer a free trial class?
Yes! We offer a free trial class for all new students—children, teens, and adults. This is the best way to experience our training style, meet the instructor team, and decide if the dojo is a good fit for you or your child.
✅ Schedule your free class visit through the scheduling form below to schedule your free class.
❓Do I or my child need any experience to join?
Not at all. Our dojo is beginner-friendly and welcomes students with no prior martial arts experience. Every new student starts with the basics and progresses at their own pace. Our instructors and senior students are always ready to help.
❓What should we wear to our first class?
For your first (trial) class, we recommend wearing comfortable workout clothes—such as a T-shirt and sweatpants. If you choose to join, we’ll guide you on how to purchase a black keikogi (training uniform) and belt appropriate to your level. We also offer school branded shirts and other items which may be purchased through our dojo store.
❓How much do classes cost?
We aim to keep our programs affordable and family-friendly. Tuition varies depending on the age group. We offer monthly and per-class rates. Discounts are available for families with multiple members enrolled (same household). For Teen Tigers and Ninja Cubs students, we also offer referral discounts ("buddy program") for friends. Fees are month to month - no annoying annual contracts!
💬 Please contact us directly for current rates and availability. We accept cash, Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp. We don't accept payments by check or credit/ATM/debit cards at this time.
❓How are students ranked or promoted?
We follow a traditional Kyu/Dan ranking system (similar to the belt system used in many Japanese martial arts). Students begin at 9th Kyu (beginner) and can advance through regular training, skill development, and instructor evaluations. Our Teen Tigers and Adult students test formally, while Ninja Cubs are assessed informally based on progress, effort, and participation. All adult and Teen Tigers rank certificates are official Bujinkan certificates which are issued through the Bujinkan Honbu office in Noda, Japan. Ninja Cubs receive an official Bujinkan Ryuuko Hikan Dojo ranking certificate, but not the Japanese certificate issued from the Bujinkan Honbu office. Once a Ninja Cub student qualifies to graduate into the Teen Tigers program, they can train for and earn an official Bujinkan rank certificate at the next scheduled rank testing event.
❓Do you teach sparring or competitive martial arts?
No. Our training is focused on realistic, self-defense-based martial arts, not sport or point-based sparring. While we do practice partner drills and resistance-based movement, our emphasis is on technique, timing, awareness, and control, not competition.
❓Who teaches the classes?
Classes are taught by experienced black belt instructors with years of training in traditional Japanese martial arts. Our head instructor, Darren Dumas, leads the advanced curriculum and provides mentorship across all programs. We also have a team of skilled assistant instructors who help with Ninja Cubs and Teen Tigers.
❓Is Bujinkan training safe for children and beginners?
Yes, safety is our TOP priority. All techniques are taught in a controlled, respectful environment. Classes are structured to meet students at their level, with age-appropriate drills, supervised training, and clear boundaries to prevent injury. Our highly qualified instructors emphasize awareness, respect, and self-control at every level of training.
